Update on Laulima Farm Stand
Update on Laulima Farm Stand.
We have been told by DOH and the Governor’s Office that Laulima Farm Stand has not been shut down but has, instead, been asked to use County chlorinated water from Kipahulu Community Kitchen or bottled water to make smoothies. We understand this has not caused the stand to close.
Maui Tomorrow is working with the Governor’s Maui liaison, Deidre Tegarden, to hold a public meeting with DOH and state representatives to discuss new DOH water requirements and how it effects local farmers. We’ll will post time and location of this meeting as soon as possible.
In [correction: threating a ] shutting down the Laulima Farm Stand in Kipahulu, State Department of Health (DOH) [correction: threatens to close ] down the healthiest and most sustainable food outlet on Maui. Without chlorinated County water, under new interpretation of old rules by Maui DOH, nothing can be served in remote, off the County waterline areas, which is where Agriculture and farm stands are encouraged and zoned.
New demands by DOH require water used on the premises to be supplied by the County system, which is unavailable in much of East Maui.
